About Me
Hello, my name is Smitha. I am a yoga teacher And ayurvedic therapist, based in welwyn garden city, Hertfordshire. I first started Hatha yoga when I was 13 under the guidance of Mrs. Leela Nair In chaganacherry a small town in kerala, India. At that time i didn’t realise how important yoga would become for me. As 5 years passed, doing yoga on and off, in 1997 i got a job in Rajasthan North india as a primary school teacher, teaching the students basic yoga when we had outside activities. Then in 2001 i got a job opportunity at The Cyril Yoga & ayurvedic centre in Goa. I started as a live-in receptionist. After a while my manger said “you must practice yoga everyday”, “it will make you flexible and give you a strong Peaceful mind”. reluctantly i would wake up at 4am, practice 30 min pranayama and meditation, then do an hour intense yoga session every single day. Slowly but surely i became flexible and stronger and started realising the full benefits. One year later my teacher asked me ” would you like to become a yoga teacher?”. I started assisting Cyrils classes and began to practice two times a day. I then i became a beginners yoga teacher. Slowly over time i started teaching intermediate, and then advance classes. Every day students from all over the world came to my classes, and my experience strengthened. In 2003, I went to Kannor PVA Ayurvedic hospital to learn ayurvedic treatment. I continued teching yoga up to 3 times a day and started giving ayurvedic treatment assisted by Cyril. I also had the opportunity to teach yoga for Indian street children in Mapusa, Goa.
After marriage i Trained at the Sivananda Yoga Centre in Kerela to gain a world teaching certificate, then moved to england in 2007. I have taught yoga in Welwyn Garden City since then. I go back to India every year for at least 6 weeks to develop my yoga practice. Some of the places i have practiced have been Purple Valley Yoga in Goa, Brahmani yoga in Goa, Krishnamacharya Yoga in chenni and Patanjali yoga in Varanasi.
here are a few reasons why i believe Yoga and Ayurveda is important in ones life
Yoga allows you to achieve a sense of wholeness in your life, where you do not feel like you are constantly trying to fit the broken pieces together. yoga allows you to find an inner peace that is not ruffled and riled by the endless stresses and struggles of life. Yoga allows you to find a new kind of freedom that you may not have known existed. After 24 years of regular practice, i still love yoga and i am learning new yoga postures every day.
Namaste
